Flow Cytometry Reagents for Cancer Research - Beyond Annexin V
The Annexin V assay which measures exposed phosphatidyl serines, a early marker of apoptosis, is a well established assay for cancer research. Using flow cytometry, apoptotic cells can be distinguished from dead cells, with a semi-quantitiative read-out. With the ability to measure multiple parameters simulataneously, flow cytometry is a particularly valuable tool when samples are limited. In addtion to apoptosis, cell prolifertation and DNA damage can be easily measured within the same sample through BrdU incorporation and H2AX.
Flow cytometry is also a practical tool for the study of the immune system in cancer. The discovery of markers such as PD-L1 (CD274) whose expression is linked to immune evasion by tumors, have re-invigorated the area of tumor immunology.
